Lets look into the Light status of these routers so that we can assist our customers in a better way.

This is a Draytek 2600 w router.
So lets have a overlook of whats all features this one has.

When we do try to login into the router Interface which is normally called as GUI in technical terms the Default user name and the password are shown as below.

Once we login, this would be the opening page of our Router.

Once we are into the GUI of the router we need to configure the same according to our Internet service provider.
We are looking into the ADSL settings of the Router.

We just need to enter the settings that are given to us by our ISP.
We can also make sure no one else is altering the settings of the router by changing the admin password from this page as shown below.

Once your router is correctly configured , we can always save the configuration file on to the computer so that, in the future at any point of time if we need to hard reset the router we can simply upload the configuration file on the Router to get it to work.

If we ever want to enable the remote user setup on this router so that we can get the setup done by experts from a remote location.

If we want to change the router’s IP Address as per our requirements we can always do the same from the screen below.

You want to change the time setup on the router.

You want to forward certain ports for your Xbox or your playstation or for any other application we can always get that done right here.

After a lot of unstable versions of the firmware , Linksys felt the need of releasing a very stable firmware for the well known WRT 54 G v8.So we are going to look into the configuration of this router in a manual way.Even in the absence of the disc that you get with the router, the manual way would be the best for routers.
Lets have a look as to how the router looks like.

This router do have 4 Ethernet ports and you can hardwire the computer to any one of them.Once your computer is connected via the Ethernet cable, we need to check if we are getting a correct IP Address from the router.
Normally the default gateway you would be getting is : 192.168.1.1
And the IP Address comes up as 192.168.1.100 and so on, as the DHCP client pool starts off with 100.
Once we make sure we are having this IP Address , we can try to login into the router in order to do the configuration manually.
We would be required to enter the router IP Address 192.168.1.1 into the address bar of the Internet explorer.

As soon as we press enter , we would get a pop up window asking us to enter a username and a password so as to get into the router configuration page which is normally referred to as the router’s GUI.

Once we enter the user name and the password, we tend to get into the basic configuration page for the router.

Now depending upon the Internet service provider ( ISP ) we have we can configure accordingly.
Normally we have a range of providers : -
1) Cable Internet Providers
2) Digital Subscriber Line ( DSL )
3) Static IP and other satellite wireless Internet providers.
Coming to the Cable providers, Everything we need to give is a domain name that is normally given by the ISP , and then we need to leave the Internet connection type on ” Automatic Configuration DHCP ” and most of the times we will need to clone the MAC Address of the Computer.

We just need to enable the MAC Address clone, Click on the button that says ” Clone the PC’s MAC ” and save the settings.
Once this is done we need to power cycle the whole system in order to get the Internet to start to work.
In the process of the power cycle , we often tend to switch off the router and the computer wait for one minute and then switch on the router first wait till the lights on the router get stable and then switch on the computer.
Coming to second type of the ISP’s
we have the DSL service providers.
These providers often provide us with a user name and a password in order to get connected to the Internet.
In such cases , In the basic configuration page we need to select the Internet connection type as PPPoE or PPPoA according to the ISP you are having.

Enter the user name and the password provided to you by the ISP and then click on save settings. Most often we get connected right away , but in case of any problem try to power off the router and the computer for about 2 minutes and then power ON the router first and then the computer.Open the GUI once again to check the status on the ” Status ” tab of the router.
Coming to the last type , the static IP Address we just need to enter all the settings that are given to us by the ISP as in the below screen shot.

After the addresses are entered , we often need to power cycle the whole system for about 2-3 minutes.
In case you have got yourself registered for the DDNS service we can just enable the same with the settings that we get after registration.

Thats the configuration of the Linksys router.Lets look into the other features of this World’s Best selling Router in the upcoming Parts.

November 7th, 2007 — Wireless Adapters
This is how the adapter looks like.

Normally Its always recommended that we use the utility that we get with the adapter…so we are going to look in to the configuration of your wireless network with the help of the belkin utility software.
First of all, we need to install the disc and then insert the adapter into the USB port whenever it is asked for.
Once the adapter is plugged in, we need to open the utility of the Belkin.Towards the right hand side bottom corner, in the startup, we should be able to see the belkin utility icon coming up as .
We can just right click on the same icon so as to open the utility. As soon as we do that , the opening page of the utility would show up as.

We are then heading towards the “Profile” tab which is referred to as ” My Connections ” .
This would be the place to create a new profile for the wireless network we are intending to connect to.

If we are configuring this for the first time we need to click on the “Add” button in order to create the profile.
If a previous profile already exist , then we just need to select the same and click on “Edit” to change the settings of the current profile.

As the network is being added, we would be asked to enter the security information of the network.
In case of WEP encryption, we just need to enter the password as below and then save the profile in order to connect to the same.

We always need to secure the network with the help of a password so as the protect our secure information from intruders.

Once the profile has been saved, we just need to goto the main tab and then try to connect to the network.
So just select the network, and then try to connect to the same.

Once the connection has established, the network would show up in green, so thats an indication that the network is now connected.
We are now concerned about the ” Options ” as this is the screen which tells us with which we are connected to the wireless. Its either the windows ” Wireless zero configuration ” or the belkin utility.

The last screen would be the help screen which gives us the information about the website of Belkin and the technical support numbers to call upon for help regarding the same.

Thanks,

This Model of belkin F5D7231 is a Wireless G Plus Router. The installation is pretty simple using the User Interface.
We would look at the router, as to how it looks like :-

We can start off with the installation by plugging the router into the power. The computer must be connected with the help of an Ethernet cable for once b’fore we can go online wirelessly.
The Router’s IP Address by default is 192.168.2.1.Once we are sure that the computer is connected with the help of an ethernet we can open the user interface of the router by typing the following numbers into the web browser.
This is how the opening page of the router looks :-

Now coming to the internet connection type.It depends on the ISP.I t can be either DSL or cable or a static IP Address as well.So the cable that comes from the ISP’s modem needs to be connected to the router at the back.Once it is connected we needs to go to the WAN connection type to enter the settings that we get from the ISP.
As soon as we click on the WAN connection type we would be asked to enter a password if it was already set.

The next page we would be in should be asking us to enter the details that we get from the ISP.These are normally called as generic router settings. With these settings we should be able to configure the WAN connection type as below :-

So for example, if our ISP is a DSL type they normally provide a username and a password along with a domain name.In this case we need to go for the PPPoE connection. This is how it looks.
Once we enter the settings after rebooting the system and the router we should get online. Now we shall proceed further to know how we can get connected wirelessly.
This is how the interface for the wireless looks :-

Normally if people like to change the name for the network, they can. They can change the SSID to anything they want. The wireless channel is normally recommended to be kept on 9 or 11 so that the level of interference would be less from other wireless objects like a cordless phone or a microwave oven sort of things.
Security would be the most important part of this wirelessExperts recommend WPA security to be the best of all .
This is how it looks :-
Second but a relatively easier way of securing your network is by using WEP encryption.

Basic wireless security types and the methods have been explained below :-

Now we are going to look into the other important features of the router. We do have an inbuilt firewall so as to protect the network.

The next most important feature is the port forwarding and the DMZ.Incase we want to use the router to play games like on Xbox live or 360 we need to forward certain ports for the communication of the game with the internet traffic. The specific ports that are given by the vendor need to be open on the interface of the router so that the game functions properly.

The DMZ is always unsafe is not recommended. All the ports tend to be open and there is a very high possibility of intrusion.

The next feature that we look into is when we want to cascade two routers .We need to make sure the default IP Address of both the routers is different so that there is no problem of NAT behind NAT.
If the IP Addresses of both the routers are same , we need to change the default IP Address of any one and then disable the DHCP client on the router so that the devices connected are going to pick up the address from the first router.
Often routers when they are cascaded they are connected on the LAN ports.

The list of devices that are connected to the router can be traced out from the list of devices that are connected.

The last one we are looking is the Remote management. We can enable this in order to get the software upgrade done.
The firmware needs to be upgraded in case you are facing some sort of problems with the wireless or some sort of intermittent connection as well
This is the page from which we tend to upgrade the file. The latest firmware or any model is normally present on the vendor’s website. That is a sort of a .bin extension file and the upgrade can be done.

We also have other utilities like reseting the router , the parental controls and others.

We can know the model number of the router by turning the router upside down and we do have the model no. printed on the same.

Basically Win XP have two types of configurations for the wireless. One of them is the windows service (Wireless Zero Configuration) or the WZC which is meant to be the default wireless. The second one is the Utility that we get with the wireless Adapter. Now we are going to see in detail both these methods of configuration with the help of unique screen shots.
Whenever both of these are present they tend to have a conflict among them because of which there might be a intermittent connectivity. How to get rid of such a problem?
Type 1:-
Starting with the Windows Service ( WZC ) :-
In order to get rid of the conflict we are generally advised to install just the driver of the adapter and not the complete utility.
Step 1:- We can do this by inserting the adapter into the slot and we get a window saying “Found new Hardware”. Insert the Installation disc that we get with the Adapter and go for the option that says “Install the software automatically”.
Step 2 :- Once we click on next it would automatically try to pick up the driver from the disc.We would then get a windows XP logo test on which we need to click “Continue anyway”.
Step 3 :- That would complete the hardware installation wizard.we are now ready to use this hardware.
Once we are done with this , next step is to check the service WZC in the service.msc.
Start –> Run –> services.msc –> wzc –> Start the service —> Automatic
Then open up the network connections window.
Start –> Run –> ncpa.cpl –> Right click on the wireless network connection.
and Go for the option that says ” View available wireless networks “.
Step 2: - We need to select our own network under the network list.A list of available networks would be shown up as below.
Step 3: - Once we select our own network we get a small button at the bottom that would allow us to “Connect”.In that case if our network is security enabled it would ask us to enter the password or the WEP key.
Step 4 : Once we enter the PASSWORD we need to click on ” Connect ” once again. We would get connected with a star against our own network.
This is the first method of getting connected wireless. Now we are going through the second method. Before we go any further we need to have a wide idea of how the adapter looks like.
This is how we insert it into the CPU, with the antenna pointing upwards. This is done to ensure good connectivity as there is less interference when the antenna is pointing in the upward direction.
2nd Method : The Utility of Net gear :-
Before we go ahead we need to make sure that the wireless zero configuration is changed to manual and the service should be stopped.
Step 1 :- Start—> run —> services.msc —> WZC —> manual —> Stop the service.
Step 2 :- We then need o open up the Net gear smart connection wizard from the all programs from the “START” menu.

Step 3:- Once the utility is open we need to go to the ” networks ” where we would be able to scan for the available network.Once the scan is complete we would be able to see all the network that are available in that particular area.
Step 4: Like we have done before , we just need to select the network we are looking for and then try to click on the ” Connect ” at the bottom of the screen. We would then be redirected to the main window where it would be asking for the security information of the wireless network.
So in case of WEP encryption we need to put a check mark against the “USE WEP Encryption” and select ” Enter the key manually ” and normally the default trasmit key would be one.
We need to enter the WEP password into key 1 and then click on “Apply “.It would get connected shortly.Once it is connected we can also go through the network diagnostics where we can know about the number of packets that are transmitted or received.
The last screen would be the About screen which is not so important. It just gives us the information about the driver version and the date.It also gives the IP Address value with which the wireless is connected.

How to configure a DLINK DI-604 router?

Here we are providing screenshots to know more about the GUI of this router.
To start off with the configuration we need to make sure whether or not the router is plugged in to the computer via an ethernet cable and also need to ensure that the power is plugged in to the back of the router.
We need to plug in the modem from the ISP to the DSL port at the rear of the router. Then start checking the IP Address.
Like in Win XP : Start —> Run —> cmd —> ipconfig —> Press “ENTER”
We get the values for IP Address and the default gateway.Default gateway is meant to be the address for the GUI of the router.
Then open up an IE or any browser and enter the value of the Default gateway into the address bar and press enter. You would see a small window asking for the username and the password.
Once we enter the default username and the password we would be on the opeing page of the router’s GUI.
Now we need to setup the interface according to the ISP of our own.ISP’s are of various types giving through cable or DSL or Satellite or many more.So we need to click on the ” WAN ” that is on the left side panel. And we need to enter the information that has been provided to us by our ISP.Like in case of DSL connections we need to enter the Username and the password that has been supplied by the ISP.
Once we enter that particular information we just need to select the “Apply” button which is at the extreme bottom.Let us take Comcast as the ISP .We just need to clone the MAC Address of the coputer and select the ” Dynamic IP Address ” inorder to complete the setup. We just need an effective powercycle inorder to get the Router up and running.Powercycle is just switching off the router and the computer and switching them back on after a couple of seconds to remove the static charge present on the router.
Coming to the LAN settings .
Sometimes it happens that there is a NAT behind NAT issue : This simply means that there is a conflict between the IP Address of the ISP and the IP Address of the router.Like if the Default gateway is same i.e.( 192.168.0.1) we just need to change the LAN IP address of the router inorder to get this to work.So we can change that from this Location.
Coming to the DHCP server thatis present on the router.
So the computers that are connected to the router basically attain an IP Address automatically because of this DHCP server. So, as the starting IP was setup as 192.168.0.100 this is going to be the IP Address for the first computer and so on.We can click on the second tab on the top that says “Advanced”.Under this we have the various applications like the filters, firewall and many more.
We are now into the advanced configurations. So coming to the various applications most important one is the port forwarding or the triggering.Incase you are using certain applications that are being blocked like a gaming console or a torrent client like azureus or anything for that sake.We just need to open up a port on the router through which we can access the applications through the internet.
Next we come over to IP Filtering.Incase you want to allow limited access to certain computers and in certain time intervals this would be the place where you can set up all such restrictions.
<!–[endif]–>There is an in built firewall in order to protect the local network from vulnerable attacks and intruders. There is an option to enable or to disable this firewall.
The FIRMWARE is the software of the Router. This is the file based on which the complete hardware works.Incase the firmware of the router goes corrupt we need to upgrade the firmware of the router. There is also an option to allow to router to upgrade the firmware by itself. You can also manually download the latest firmware version from the website : www.dlink.com and then you can manually upgrade the firmware yourself.Keeping the firmware of the router up to date is really essential.
There is a place to change the administrator password as well. This is the password that you type at the login screen. On the same you can also tend to enable or disable the remote management.
Finally the status page is the place where you get to know whether or not there is connectivity to the internet or to the respective ISP.
Last but not the least of all is the wireless.
Please Note : Although this particular model DI-604 do not have any sort of wireless, we have taken DSL-604 into consideration inorder to cover up the wireless settings as well. This is the place where you can setup up a name to your wireless network and you also have a chance to setup any level of wireless security to make your wireless secure.
Thanks and Regards,
